Quarter of a Century Old

On 3rd January 1853, Solomon Northup, a free black man who was kidnapped and sold to slavery, regained his freedom.

164 years later, I turned twenty-five.

The significance of this is that I only came to know his story in the enactment of his widely acclaimed memoir “12 Years a Slave” on my birthday. Here’s a tribute to the 164th anniversary of his freedom.

I was deeply moved by his recount as a slave – his anguish and despair in face of injustice. So I have made a resolution to be hospitable to the “slaves” of our times and give support for their freedom.

When is your birthday? Have you made any resolutions this year?

Do catch the movie “12 Years a Slave” – of which all of the actors and actresses are due to be nominated for the Oscars! What!? Read this.

Happy new year!
